Singer-composer Shibani Kashyap recently shared her experiences of facing hurdles in the film industry and finding ways to continue creating music. Despite being a well-known name in the industry, Kashyap has not lent her voice to a Bollywood song in nearly five years, choosing instead to focus on live shows and concerts.
Kashyap acknowledges the presence of “camps” in Bollywood, with set singers and musicians who have a stronghold in the industry. She recognizes that it can be difficult for other singers to break into the scene and therefore chooses not to “knock on a door that won’t open”. While she is open to singing for films, she prefers to focus on creating music that is loved and followed by her fans.
The singer reflects on the challenges she faced as a female artist in a male-dominated industry. Despite her success with the hit song “Hogai Hai Mohabbat”, Kashyap found that her path forward was not smooth sailing. She faced hindrances and challenges, and often felt that being part of a camp was necessary to move forward.
Kashyap also speaks to the power dynamics within the industry, noting that “music giants” control who can enter and succeed. She recalls knocking on many music directors’ doors, only to be told that she should focus on creating her own music.
Despite the obstacles she has faced, Kashyap remains content and happy with the work that comes her way. She takes pride in representing India at prestigious shows and events, and sees it as a greater accomplishment than any role in the industry.
Kashyap’s experiences shed light on the reality of the film industry, where power and influence often determine success. However, her perseverance and commitment to creating music have allowed her to carve out a space for herself and continue to pursue her passion.
