Ritesh Agarwal is a name that has become synonymous with innovation and entrepreneurial success in India’s hospitality industry. At the age of just 27, he has already established himself as one of the most influential figures in the country’s business landscape, thanks to his pioneering work with OYO Rooms. Through his vision and hard work, he has transformed the way Indians think about affordable travel and accommodation, and his impact on the industry is only set to grow in the years to come.
Born in the small town of Bisam Cuttack in Odisha, Ritesh’s entrepreneurial spirit began to manifest itself at a young age. He was fascinated by technology and its potential to disrupt established industries, and spent much of his teenage years exploring different business ideas. However, it wasn’t until he embarked on a backpacking trip across India at the age of 17 that he stumbled upon the idea that would eventually make him a household name.
During his travels, Ritesh noticed a significant gap in the market for affordable, standardized accommodation options that were suitable for budget-conscious travelers. He realized that there was a huge demand for this kind of service, and that traditional hotels and guesthouses were simply not equipped to meet it. With this in mind, he began to develop a concept for a budget hotel chain that would offer high-quality amenities and consistent service standards, while still being affordable enough for ordinary Indians to use.
Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, including financial constraints and regulatory hurdles, Ritesh was determined to bring his idea to life. In 2013, he founded OYO Rooms, a hotel chain that would offer clean, comfortable and affordable rooms to travelers across India. He started small, with just 11 rooms in a Gurgaon hotel, but quickly expanded his business.
